Project Description

Public Transport is run by ATAC, which manages both surface transit, such as buses, trolleybuses, trams and railways, and the subway.

City buses have a silver livery, the new ones are red. Bus stops are recognizable by yellow bus signs or green electronic passenger information systems, which show the waiting time in real time.

There are only 3 Underground lines (called “Metropolitana” or “Metro”):
A (recognizable by its orange sign), B and B1 (blue sign) and C (green sign).

Line B is divided into two lines called Line B and Line B1. They arrive at the same platform: Line B goes to REBIBBIA and Line B1 goes to JONIO. You must pay attention to the train’s destination, which, in any case, is communicated to passengers on the electronic displays.

The Underground stations are identified by the symbol metropolitana.

Telephone coverage, using GSM and UMTS/HSPA technology, is available in the Underground.
Numerous Wi-Fi hot spots, recognizable by a pictograph with the symbol “Wi-Fi”, are available for Public Transport passengers. They are located on some trams, bus terminals and electronic passenger information systems and allow you to surf the internet an hour a day for free and give you free unlimited access to public transport and tourist information sites.

Tickets are valid for buses, trams, trolleybuses, the subway and the urban routes of Cotral regional buses. They can also be used on regional railways such as Rome-Lido, Rome-Viterbo, Rome-Giardinetti and on Trenitalia regional trains (2nd class urban route).

Ticket vending machines are located in many parts of the city, at bus terminals and in all the subway stations. Tickets can be purchased at tobacconists, newsagents and on online here.

You must have a ticket before getting on the bus otherwise you will get a fine. On buses and trams you will find ticket validation machines. If you have a single ticket then enter the ticket into the machine, if you have purchased a pass, you put the pass into the machine on your first journey. This stamps the date and time from which the pass or ticket is valid.

On buses the BIT ticket is valid for 100 minutes allowing you to change buses using a single ticket.

At subway stations there are ticket barriers where you have to insert your ticket to enter and leave the station.

Make sure you keep your ticket until the end of your journey because ticket inspectors might ask you to show it and also because you may have to punch it again at the exit in some stations.

You can also buy tickets with your smartphone with the app “myCicero” and validate it while boarding the bus, by clicking “Validate” on the screen where the ticket is shown and after 100 minutes the ticket will automatically expire. If you validate the ticket for the underground a QR code will be generated in order to open the turnstile. It works also with NFC-enabled devices. The BIT ticket is valid for a single journey on the subway.

Access to the Metro lines is possible also with digital cards on NFC-enabled devices (smartphones, smartwatches etc.) and by contactless Credit, Debit or Prepaid Card, or that has the symbol thanks to the tap & go service.
To enter using the tap & go service you have to approach your contactless payment card or your reader-enabled device, wait for the green light on the screen and the consequent unlocking of the turnstile. If the reader detects more than one payment card or contactless device, the turnstile will not open. To avoid this problem, place near the reader only the device or card you want to use removing it from the wallet.
Remember that on the B1 line there are also exit turnstiles and you will have to tap again to exit the station. The exit tap does not involve further charges.
The ticket price is calculated automatically according to the journeys made during the day, so as to always apply the most convenient fare. For example, with a single tap on the turnstile you will be charged € 1.50, corresponding to a BIT ticket. After the fourth metro trip over a 24-hour period, the system automatically activates the urban daily ticket rate of € 7.00.
In case of ticket inspections by ATAC personnel, you´ll just have to show them your card or the device used for validation.
The service works on the entire metro network of Rome (metro lines A, B/B1 and C) and on the regional railway lines operated by Atac (Roma-Lido, Termini-Centocelle, Roma- Viterbo urban section), in the stations equipped with entrance turnstiles. Furthermore, you will be able to continue your journey on all Atac surface urban vehicles (buses, trams and trolleybuses) up to the hourly validity of the ticket (100 minutes), provided that the journey has started at one of the above mentioned stations.

Children ride free on ATAC through their 10th year.

TAXI

Rome has a single number 060609 called “ChiamaTaxi” which makes it easier and faster to call the closest taxi near you.

If you dial number +39 060609, you will be asked to give an address and street number. Make sure you speak clearly. The system then sends the message to the nearest taxi to you, which will respond and confirm its arrival.

Another option could be to call a Taxi cooperative. Here are some of them:

Taxi cooperative Phone number
3570
+39 063570
6645
+39 066645
Samarcanda
+39 065551
Taxi Tevere
+39 064994 | +39 064157
Asso Taxi
+39 3393333414

Not all taxis have POS so if you want to pay by credit card make sure you find out first before booking.

Some destinations to/from the airports of Fiumicino and Ciampino already have a fixed price. You can have a look in the section “How to get to Rome by plane” for more details.

UberBLACK

Uber offer in Rome only UberBLACK, typically a luxury sedan. Black is the most expensive Uber service.

ROMA PASS

The Roma Pass is the card issued by the City Council of Rome that allows you to enter the first 2 museums or archeological sites of your choice for free and then to have a reduced price on tickets for successive museums or archeological sites. It also allows you free access to the city’s public transport network.

The 48 Hours validity card costs € 28.00 whereas the 72 Hours validity one costs € 38.50.

You can find the list of the museums included in the offer on the website //www.romapass.it/?l=en, but please note that none of the Vatican sites is included.

The cards can be bought online or at the PIT (Tourist Information Points) whose addresses are listed on the website.

The best way to judge if the card is worth your while is to add up the costs of the places that you want to visit and if the cost is below the amount of the card then you should go ahead and buy it, otherwise it is better to buy your tickets separately. It is usually more convenient when you have to visit three or more sites and use public transport.
