Project Description

Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona is one of the most popular places in the city because of its extraordinary urban setting. Its typical oval shape follows the pattern of the antique perimeter of the Domitian stadium beneath it, built in 85 A.D.

There are architectonic and sculpted elements belonging to masters such as Gian Lorenzo Bernini (for example the fountain of the Four Rivers at the centre of the square), Francesco Borromini and Girolamo Rainaldi (the Church of Santa Agnese in Agone) and Pietro da Cortona (the author of the frescoes in the gallery in Pamphilj Palace).

At the centre of the western part of Piazza Navona, you can admire the Church of Santa Agnese in Agone, a Baroque masterpiece created by Francesco Borromini. Chamber music concerts take place in Borromini’s Sacristy every Friday at 7.00 p.m.

At 40, Corso Rinascimento, close to Piazza Navona, you can find the Church of Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza, also created by Francesco Borromini. Thanks to its artistic, technical and symbolic value, the edifice is considered to be one of the masterpieces of the architect, Baroque and the history of architecture in general.
