Project Description
Galleria Spada
It is located in the Spada building, also famous for its façade and for the false perspective of Borromini.
The false perspective is created on the basis of an illusion that makes the gallery look about 35 metres long, whereas it doesn’t even get to 9 metres. The illusion is due to the fact that the floors converge on one vanishing point, whereas the ceiling is inclined, getting lower as you walk through the gallery, as opposed to the mosaic floor which is slightly uphill.
At the end of the gallery, in a garden lit by the sun, there is a sculpture which looks as if it’s full-sized but is actually only 60 cm high!
To create the false perspective, Borromini was helped by a mathematician: Father Giovanni Maria da Bitonto.
Galleria Spada is located on the first floor in an area of the Palace dating back to the sevenhundred’s; the collection contains paintings (especially from the Seventeenth century), antique sculptures, décor and antique furniture. It has works by Guercino, Baciccia, Orazio Gentileschi and Guido Reni.
