Circus Maximus is an ancient Roman circus, which was dedicated to horse chariot racing and other shows.

Today it is a vast green area with a little medieval tower on the South side, whereas on the Palatine, in the background, there are the remains of ancient imperial buildings. In the past, it was the biggest edifice dedicated to shows of all times.

The size of the circus was exceptional: 621 metres long and 118 metres wide, it could host about 250,000 people. People came to watch horses racing in chariots with twelve quadrilles (3 chariots pulled by four horses each).

Today, Circus Maximus is used to go for walks, have picnics or as a site for different kinds of exhibitions.

The most traditional of these exhibitions takes place on the 21st of April, Rome’s birthday, when there are celebrations all around the capital, and usually Circus Maximus is the favourite location to recall the history of Ancient Rome.

The beautiful Parco Savello, also called the Orange Garden (Giardino degli Aranci), where you can look at one of the best views of Rome, is not too far from Circus Maximus.
